Ebook About
The New York Times–bestselling author’s “haunting, compassionate, and terrifyingly true” story of a man breaking free from his notorious past (Gregg Olson, New York Times–bestselling author of Starvation Heights).   From 1926 to 1928, Gordon Stewart Northcott committed at least twenty murders on a chicken ranch outside of Los Angeles. He held his nephew, Sanford Clark, captive there from the age of thirteen to fifteen. Sanford would be Northcott’s sole surviving victim. Forced by Northcott to take part in the murders, he carried tremendous guilt all his life. Yet despite his youth and the trauma he endured, Sanford helped gain justice for the dead and their families by testifying at the trial that led to Northcott’s execution.   These shocking events inspired Clint Eastwood’s film The Changeling. But in The Road Out of Hell, acclaimed crime writer Anthony Flacco uses revelatory new accounts from Sanford’s son to tell the complete, true story. Going beyond the film’s narrative, Flacco recounts not only Sanford’s nightmarish captivity, but also the inspiring life he led afterward.   In dramatizing one of the darkest cases in American crime, Flacco constructs a riveting psychological drama about how Sanford was able to detoxify himself from the evil he’d encountered, offering the ultimately redemptive story of one man’s remarkable ability to survive hell on earth and emerge intact.

Book The Road Out of Hell: Sanford Clark and the True Story of the Wineville Murders Review :

What a sicko family. Several times, I just had to sit back and ask myself what I was reading. Content is disturbing! The author did an amazing job of telling this difficult story. The movie The Changeling was based on this book....however, the movie had the possibility of Walter Collins escaping.....which is untrue.Gordon Stewart Northcott was a MONSTER, and his mother is hopefully burning in hell, where she belongs. The Northcotts were sociopaths--poor Sanford, his sister, and their father excluded. The jury is out on "Stewart" Northcott's father. Surely, he knew his son was a danger to society on some level.Sanford's parents were useless sacks of you know what. What kind of family sends a 13 year-old off with their pedophile uncle under the premise of starting a chicken ranch? Since my 13 year-old grandmother was farmed out to harvest potatoes in 1913 Denmark, I suppose I have something of an answer. Rural parents just saw kids as work horses, and there were no laws to hold their feet to the fire. THIS family was backwoods HICK at its worst. For anyone who criticizes that we are "helicopter parenting" now, I suggest you read this book and be grateful. We've come a long way in society. Even though it may not feel like it sometimes, this book will remind you that we have.
After seeing Clint Eastwood's film, "The Changeling", which referenced the Wineville murders, I became intrigued in learning more about them, being an aficionado of the true crime genre. The Wineville murders took place on a chicken ranch outside of Los Angeles, where, from 1926 to 1928, a psychopathic pedophile named Gordon Stewart Northcott would lure young, prepubescent boys. There, he would sexually assault and torture them before putting them out of their misery. Gordon was reluctantly aided in this by his young nephew, Sanford Clark, whom he had repeatedly sexually assaulted and tortured.Gordon, as well as Sanford, were Canadian. In fact, the Northcotts left Canada under mysterious circumstances, and emigrated to Los Angeles, where they lived with Gordon. They were a totally hideous family. The father was a passive aggressive weakling, while the mother allowed her son to do whatever he wanted, as Gordon could do no wrong in her eyes. Gordon had an equally horrible married sister, Winifred Clark, who was very much like her mother and remained in Canada with her own passive aggressive husband and children. When the Northcotts bought a small property outside of Los Angeles by the town of Wineville, they decided to make it into a chicken ranch run by Gordon.Gordon then went to Canada to visit his sister. Needing some cheap labor, he asked to take his eleven year old nephew with him to the chicken farm to help him out and work the farm. His sister refused, giving him, instead, her least favorite and much abused child, thirteen year old Sanford, who did not want to go. Unfortunately, he had no say in the matter and his spineless father did not stand up for him. Only his older sister, Jessie, cared but was powerless to do anything about it, as she was still a minor. So, off Sanford went with his uncle Gordon to the chicken farm, where his nightmarish two year odyssey would begin. The book details what happened to Sanford and other young boys on that chicken farm at the hands of his psychopathic uncle and even his grandmother, Gordon's mother. Talk about hellish! Were it not for the eventual intervention of Sanford's caring sister, Jessie, who knows how much more evil might have been perpetrated on that chicken farm and how many more young lives tortured and lost?Gordon and his mother were eventually arrested. What had happened on that chicken farm in Wineville was so hideous that the town changed its name! The traumatized Sanford turned states evidence and justice was done. For doing the right thing, he was given a new lease on life. He went on to lead a good life and become a responsible, loving husband and father, despite the trauma that had befallen him. The book provides a birds-eye view into life on that chicken farm and is replete with illustrative photographs. Those who are fans of the true crime genre will be riveted.
